I see instructions on DIY and HGTV for crushing up used plates, cups, etc to make mosaics. I want to make a series of concrete stepping stones for my yard and I want to top them with mosaic patterns. How do you deal with the rounded surfaces of the ceramic pieces?
My mom gave me some left over glass pieces from her stained glass. How do I cut these pieces to make patterns?

Hi I’m going a mirror and frame mosaic for my sisters’ birthday. I have got some ply and glued my mirror to it, now I want to mosaic a border around the edge. I have a 3cm border of ply to cover with tiles. I have lots of 1cm x 1cm vitreous glass tiles to use.
I was going to ‘butt’ them up against each other so I have no gap (using no-nails glue so it’s a strong fix as doesn’t need to be weather proof should be ok) but I was told I have to grout them, if I do I’ll only have 2 tiles and a lot of grout between as I cant fit all 3 and the grout on the border I have. Do I have to grout them or can I just grout around the edge of the frame to make it tidier?
Thanks
Thanks. I’ve primed the ply first (scored and covered with a PVA&water mix) the no nails works really well. It’s going on a living room wall so should be ok, well away from damp air.
Is there anything i can coat it with to protect it from dirt etc other than grout?

i want to be more creative and its a bummer that i dont have the experience that some crafters my age have. is it something that comes natural or is it something you practice and learn with time. i would love to make amigurami or whatever its called or knit or sew. i love beading and playing with felt. mosaics and stained glass are also really fun to do, but im not good at it, and i dont feel creative. what could i look at or do to inspire me in being more creative. what do you do to get ideas or your next craft project. thanks
When I moved into my house the kitchen had a slate floor that was coming up all over the place. The joists are over-spanned and the person who installed the floor just put the tile right on plywood. It was doomed from the beginning. I have pulled up the tile with the intent of putting down some cheap crappy floor as a temporary measure until I totally remodel the kitchen at which time I am replacing the floor down to the joists, and actually a few of the joists themselves.
Ideally I’d like to just put a sheet of linoleum down, but there is thinset still stuck in places and it is a real bear to get off. I’ve gotten it all down to less than a 16th of an inch or so, but it’s still not good enough to put a sheet floor over.
I considered putting luan over it and screwing it down good, but am afraid with the unevenness, and lack of contact the floor will move around, perhaps ungluing the sheet flooring.
I’ve also considered putting thinset Between the plywood and luan to try to bond them and wind up with a thick piece of wood/concrete composite. That seems like a gamble. It might be stiff enough not to move enough to crack. Or it might not be, then I’d have little pieces of cracked off thinset between two layers of wood.
Any suggestions? Insight?
I don’t want to pull the plywood up since the cabinets, stove, dishwasher, and other things are presently sitting on it.
I want to put mosaic tiles on the risers & treads of my outdoor steps, what would be a great adhesive for this that can withstand the elements of occasional rain, low temps & snow?
Woud there be a problem if I started it now that it is cool in Maryland?
Suppose you are making mosaic tiles from 3 types of stained glass. You need 6 square feet of glass for the project and you want there to be as much iridescent glass as red and blue glass combined. The cost of a sheet of glass having an area of 0.75 square foot is .50 for iridescent, .50 for red, and .50 for blue. How many sheets of each type should you purchase if you plan to spend on the project?
