Best way to make a hookah?

Date May 13, 2010

Hi. I am a mosaic artist. I use broken glass, jewelry, and other found/recycled objects to cover things like furniture, vases, bottles, etc. I recently had a request for a hookah. I plan to make it out of a large wine or liquor bottle, over which I will place my mosaic. But as for the mechanism, I’m lost. I’ve tried to do some research online but haven’t really found a good, clear answer.

What is the best way to make a nice-looking, sell-able hookah? I’m pretty handy and ok with buying supplies at the hardware store, but I don’t want it to look "junky" and homemade. However, I don’t want to spend more than necessary, either. I need something to compliment my artwork and to be of good enough quality to justify the price, which is going to be fairly high considering a piece that size sells for 0 or more without being made into a hookah.

Is there a kit I can buy? If I have to buy the pieces separately, either from a hookah supply store or from a hardware store, what do I need exactly?

I know I’m asking for a lot. Thanks in advance.
Thank you! I actually joined hookaforum late last night and got some great replies.

well i can’t tell u exactly how to make a homemade hookah, but i will tell u that one of my friends friend made a hookah with a big smirnoff bottle, and made the stem and everything else.
i have seen pictures, it hits just as nice if not nicer than her store bought hookahs for like 50 bucks and up.
not counting the bottle and the bowl to go on top it cost 7 bucks to make, not bad
    good luck
