Can you think of something creative and cheap/free to use as a floor covering?

Date May 13, 2010

I’m about to do a little work on a house and I’m trying to think of some creative floor coverings to use instead of the normal stuff. Carpet tiles are cool and around a buck a tile for little over 1sq ft. But I want cheaper and more creative. One of my ideas is to take wood scraps from the construction on the house, fit the chunks together on the floor, and liquid nails them to the floor, forming a mosaic style wood floor. Cheap and should look good.

Any other ideas?

you can even use glass… a smash a Heineken bottle for the green? an agua bottle for the bright blue, etc etc. its interesting, install properly to not cut yourself but its been done a million times and it looks amazing!

umm… how about… you get like that liquid glue/plastic stuff and make tiles out of that. you can also put whatever you want in it before it hardens.

it might work although it seems quite funky in my head.

I would not liquid nail them directly to the floor but the mosaic idea is interesting. I would use an inexpensive under lament and only use liquid nails after laying out a complete pattern I liked. I would do that just in case I changed my mind down the line and wanted to put something else down. It would be easier to remove then.

If you have a concrete sub-floor, you can rip everything out and just stain the concrete or paint it over with porch paint or epoxy. You can come up with pretty interesting designs. It is very cheap and easy and you can get as creative as you want.
