did a messy job laying slate tile, need some help getting thinset off the top.?

Date July 31, 2010

yesterday i tiled my entry foyer (75sq’). I used slate tile for the job. I did an excellent job it laying them level and even….but i think i screwed up terribly.

in order to make the tiles even with the wood floor that they are going to meet up with, i had to use a decent amount of thinset. i layed thinset on the floor and then "back-buttered" the tiles to get me the right height.

In the process of doing this, i got a lot of thinset on the tops of the tiles. i thought that i might be able to go back and chip it off pretty easily, but im finding that this isnt the case.

this was a total amateur mistake! what can i do to clean up the top of the slate tiles that i just installed?

try a solid brick use it like sandpaper, rub it over the thin set,
also check the container for they type of setting agent, there might be a solvent to loosen it,

Use some vinegar and a microfiber cloth and an old toothbrush. It’s going to take some elbow grease but it will come off.
The vinegar is acidic so it will take off the thinset.

A diluted mixture of muriatic acid should remove most of it, buy it at a masonry supply house.

I have to counter dict most of the 1 st 3 answers sorry.. Vinigar may help but isn t really very strong for thin set.. If you use a brick or sand paper you ll leave the slate w/ marks and digs in it.. Again w/ muatic acid you ll mar the slate.. What I do is use a small pc of wood ( a shin works good) and scrape the "heavy "stuff off..you can wash some of the remaining residue off but you won t get it all.. Then I use a product made for removing grout haze and thinset along w/ a white nylon scub pad.. Reseal slate after its clean ( I hope you presealed it before setting it and again before grouting.. This is a must on all natural stone GL
