Lowe's stocks a full line of products from Dupont for tile cleaning and maintenance. Visit their Flooring department and ask for Dupont's Stone and Tile cleaner. It is specially formulated to remove all the stuff that gets embedded in the pores of your stone. After a good rinse and allowing it to dry 24 hrs, I recommend their Stone Enhancer to bring out the natural beauty of the stone which enriches the color, and then follow up with their Stone Sealer which can be purchased in high gloss or semi gloss.
All stone is porous and is likely to have grease and oil stains that won't come out all the way if the seal hasn't be kept up. I haven't cleaned stone, yet, but will be interested in the answers you get. We just put slate around our outdoor grill.
There are special cleaners meant for stone and stone products. The use of bleaches , ammonia's and vinegar (acid) may etch and harm the stone. Tile pro ( available at Home depot and any tile stores)puts out a good line of stone cleaners and sealers. If you choose, there are sealers that enhance and bring out the natural colors in slate Any questions e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
