How do I remove cleaning residue from slate floor?
July 18, 2009
We are renting a house and there is slate flooring in the kitchen and hallways. I don’t know what type of slate or when it was last sealed (if ever). We went to our home improvement store and the guy in the flooring section gave us a stone and tile cleaner to use plus a sealer for after. We washed a small 2×4 section with the cleaner to test it out. It has left the slate looking chalky when it dries. We have rinsed it repeatedly with water, but it is still chalky. You can’t see the residue when wet. What will remove the residue? (Does vinegar water actually work?) or should we just seal over it? There is so much contradictory information on the web about how to treat slate! I really need some good advice!
I heard using veg. or olive oils will turn rancid in the stone?

the stone is chalky b/c it isnt sealed and therefore is veryyyyy vulnerable to cleaning products. i would recommend sanding the slate if possible to get that residue off and sealing the tile after. slate is porous and may absorb the cleaner, thats what i think happened to you. or maybe try elbow grease and water. hopefully the slate hasnt been stained at all by the cleaner, if you find that is the case, nothing you can do just seal ‘er up.
p.s. do not use olive oil all that will do is seal the tile. olive oil is generally used to seal granite counter tops.
