How to do a tile kitchen backsplash around an oddly placed outlet?

Date April 11, 2009

We are going to be tiling our kitchen backsplash and we plan to do the tile from the countertop all the way up to the cabinet base. I have seen many posts about how to tile around outlets, (how you have to extend the plug out) but our problem is that we have a three-switch outlet that is placed halfway into the area where we will tile, and the other half is extended beyond the countertop and cabinet where you wouldn't put tiles. We want to tile straight up from the end of the countertop, so does anyone have a suggestion of what to do in this situation?

Thanks!
Sarah

All the back splashes I ve done over the year and have run into this several times.
You have to move the out let , but the trouble is most of the time the outlet is nailed to a stud on the left side, so you can t always move it , plus the wiring isn t long enough to properly move it.
Or you have to extend the tile out further than you d like because it doesn t look as good to have the tile cut through the outlet.
Or bring the trim straight down and then out and around the out let and then back down to the counter top. This way the face plate is setting completely on tile.
Or tile it straight down and have a gap on the face plate and then caulk it to hide the gap. I ve had to do all the above . I had given the customer the options,,Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar GL

The cleanest solution would be to move the outlet, preferably outside the tiled area.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear but your only other choice is to cut back the tile far enough from the outlet so that you can keep a cover on it. It won't look as nice but it won't be as noticeable as you might imagine once everything is finished.
