How to remove bitumen before fixing slate tiles?

Hi I have removed some thermoplastic tiles and now want to replace them with slate tiles, but there is a layer of bitumen on the floor! Is there a way to remove it or can it be sealed and tiled over? if so with what?

Depends on exactly how much is down and how well bonded it still is. There are methods of going over these products , but w/o knowing more and what kind of substrate your going over as to what you need to do next.
