Is a 4" Granite backsplash necessary if you are planning to tile the backsplash?

Date April 6, 2011

We are remodeling our kitchen and are installing a granite countertop. We’ve picked out a great tile to go with it and plan to tile the entire backsplash. Our granite guy is insisting that we go with a 4" granite backsplash and then tile above that. I think he’s just insisting that to sell more granite.

What is normal? All of the backsplash being tile or a 4" granite piece and then the tile backsplash? My initial preference is to tile only, but I want to be sure that there is no reason that the 4" granite piece is there as well and since I know my granite guy only wants to sell more granite, I would like to hear other opinions….

I do 99% of new granite tops with out the 4" splash. Most often the reason they try and insist on the splash is that they don t have to scribe the top in so tight. Having a tile back splash they MUST scribe the top in nice so there are no gaps. With a 4" splash they have almost 3/4" to play with. Don t let them. Plus obviously they do sell more material and labor. It looks better if the tile comes all the way down. I have pictures of jobs I ve done if you want to see for your self.

I would ask him if there is a benefit to adding the 4 inches. He may be thinking about water or other liquids running across the counter which would not damage the granite, but the caulking on tile is more prone to mold, mildew, staining, etc. Otherwise, I think that it is strictly a personal preference.

There is no need for the 4" granite when using tile. I have the granite countertop/tile back splash and it works fine.

IT is not necessary. If it is already installed, I would leave it and tile above it(the reason being you paid for it). If you have not, I would leave it our, it does cost money to do it that can be put towards a tile backsplash.
