i like to save my slate roofing scraps, i break or cut them into pieces and separate them into colors. sometimes i incorporate other stone scraps (which can be found for free at construction site dumpsters) like limestone or marble to achieve certain colors that slate does not. then, just draw a picture freehand, then just glue your tiles and grout. i'm somewhat of a purist so i only use standard mortar mix (portland cement and sharp sand) but sometimes tile mastics are the best for mosaics cause mastic will give you more time to work than standard mortar. get inspired but do it yourself, it will be much more rewarding. good luck!
