Leveling a cement floor after slate removal?

Just removed slate tiles from my foyer. They appeared to be cemented down. Now that the slate is gone how do I go about leveling the floor to lay down new ceramic tile. The slate sat above the wood floor about 1/4 inch. Do I have to gouge out the left over cement to make the new tiles even with the wood floor? If so, what’s the easiest way to do that? I don’t know if there is a subfloor or just foundation. Help, my foyer looks like a bomb went off in it!!

That a tough one to anwser. You may have to recement the floor to level it. There is a product that you can buy at a flooring supply store, It a self leveling cement. You mix it and pour it and with a little troweling it level it self. After it harden you can install your ceramic tile……..Have fun!
P.S. I am not sure if Home Depot carry such product. you can ask.

Sounds like the slate was put down with a thin set mortar. If you want to leave the mortar and put tile down over it simply buy some more thin set mortar mix it real soft and with a flat trowel smooth the top surface with the loose mortar. The next day you should be able to set the new tile directly over the thin set bed. As far as the wood floor height simply by a transaction strip of wood or a threshold. Home Depot or Lowes has all of these products.
