Mirror as a backsplash in the kitchen?

Date August 7, 2010

We are thinking of adding back splash in a our kitchen. I would like to have a cool and modern touch to it. However, I am not sure if we should go with installing Mirror as a backsplash or just stick with regular tiled backsplash. Suggestions please

a mirror would look cool if you kept it clean…. it also depends on what color your painting the rest of the kitchen and the countertops and colors…. i think if your going for a bright kitchen like bright blue i think it would look very cool, but if your going towards a yellow or a darker color.. it just wont look that cool

a mirrored backsplash would look great, you would just have to clean if frequently. If that’s what you want and are willing to keep it clean, then go for it.

Mirror would be okay, but they also sell tiles that look like mirrors I believe at Home Depot and Lowes. I would check that option out as well and see if you like that look. I’ve seen them on the Home and Garden channel shows all the time. Good luck and happy re-decorating!

tile looks nice and can be protected with a coat of car wax before you use it. easy to clean.

I have also seen people use plexiglass covering…. you can still see the color of the wall underneath… easy to wash.

i would go with the tile.. if you did the mirror thing you would be cleaning more than you are cooking…. it would look good tho i think but… to easy to mess up

    I think it sounds neat.

What about some type of polished metal though? Something that reflects well and is shiny but you won’t find yourself staring at yourself while you cook?

There’s also the possibility of something like stainless steel, it would add a unique, modern touch that won’t scratch like a polished metal will.

I’m curious to see other suggestions since I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing for a couple months now.

Hey it’s up to you! Unlike what Dr.Phil says, IT IS ABOUT YOU! Great idea, cleaning will be constant though. I’d definitely suggest not using a real mirror however because they break! I knew a guy who broke a mirror, picked the pieces up by hand, and nicked a finger. Cleaned it up with Hydrogen Peroxide, and a bandage. Next morning, before he came to work, he noticed a red line coming from the cut, going up his wrist. Went to the doctor, that very morning. The doctor saw him, evaluated,(blood tests, etc.), and had him in surgery in an hour. Amputated his arm up to the shoulder! Turns out mirrors are coated with Quicksilver on the back, and this is made from Mercury, highly poisonous! Don’t know if mirrors still use Quicksilver, but THIS got my ATTENTION! I really respect mirrors now! Not trying to scare, just passing info, I worked with this guy in Weatherford,TX at a vinyl siding manufacturing company.

Mirror would look cool. Another thing you might want to try is using Metal Roofing Flashing- available at lowes and home depot, a little bit cheaper, but about the same effect. The only problem with the mirror is the constant cleaning like some have already said. Although I cannot believe that if you used tile or something else you wouldn’t have to clean it.

have you ever thought of copper, for the back splash,?

mirrors tend to need to much cleaning , water etc

only thing with a mirror youd have to be careful nuttin hits it cuz it would crack pretty easy and you will be replacing that all the time
