Sealing slate and grout?

Date August 10, 2010

I just put slate floor tile down and grouted it. I am going to seal the slate with the stuff that makes it look wet. Do I seal the grout first with separate grout sealer and then do the slate with the wet look stuff? Or does the slate wet look sealer do both? I have looked at instructions on both products and neither address this. Thanks!

The sealer you have is fine for both. Let it set up for a whole weekend and make sure the humidity in the room is 60% or less. Observe and see how the slate absorbs the sealer. You may need a second coat This is something you will have to do annually. Also, do not forget to follow the directions on the container for the proper cleaning detergent to use. This is very important because I have seen tiled floor damaged (yellowed) by using the wrong cleaner. Keep in mind that sealers wear down and grout and even slate are porous.

First make sure you wait at least 3 full days before sealing the grout or it may turn glow in the dark white. As for sealing the slate and grout just do them both with the same product. It will work great for you. Keep in mind that slate is very porous and will require more than one application of sealer to achieve the wet look.
