Sub floor for tile in a basement?

Date August 4, 2010

I bought a house and the basement was being finished and now I have inherited the project. The basement has a subfloor laid which is chip board and has been attached with what looks like bolts or pins fired by .22 cartridges.

My goal for this project is to lay a nice heavy slate on the floor since there is a 60,000 BTU fireplace down there i want something sparks will not mark. Would I be best to screw a solid plywood floor to the chip board to make a better base for the tile? Or should I rip it all up and re do the project?

I would do extra securing of the chip board to the cement and put a 1/2 in cement board over that. (Properly installed) One problem w/ that , you should have the galvanized nails go thru the chip board but they won t because of the cement. They didn t use sleepers did they? If they used 22 cart. they probably didn t. You have to use 1 1/4 nails or screws then to nail the thin setted cement board down with. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications GL

If the sub floor was attached to the concrete without a vapor barrier then I would start from scratch. I would have attached treated 1 x 4′s to the floor with 3/4 foam insulation board between them, put a vapor barrier over that, and then attached the sub floor. I would then attach cement board before laying the slate tile.

There are a couple of things here. One,do not use a vapor barrier period. You have a large enough fireplace to maintain adequate air quality. If the "chip" board have plastic cleats underneath them, then this is acceptable. If not, I would rip up and go to a concrete undelayment, followed by you choice of flooring.
