type of molding to separate 2 ceramic floors?

Date June 16, 2010

I need a molding /trim to unite my kitchen ceramic floor to my hallway ceramic floor. They have similar colors but are not the same. Wood trim makes too much of a difference. I was thinking of creating my own mosaic style using the two ceramics. Any other ideas? I’m looking for a natural flow.

a lot of people use white marble transitions between unlike ceramic tiles. Personally I just butt them together with a grout joint and grout it

at first its noticable to you and only you but after awhile even you won’t notice it

I hate wood transitions between two unlike tiles

Your mosaic idea sounds interesting. I would probably use wood, but it would be somewhat glaring. Do you absolutely have to have a transition piece?

Well, how big is the gap separating the two? If not too big, Lowe’s sells ceramic pieces that would suffice for what you are needing. Most times, they come in strips that are at least 2-3 inches wide. If your gap is less, take a carpenter’s knife and cut off the excess and trim to fit you gap.

BUT, before you do this, you need to research something. Ceramic floors need room to expand….there should be small gaps at your walls- filled with a caulk. There is also a requirement that long spans need to have an expansion gap- –like where two rooms meet. Good luck.

What style of home are you using?

If there is a doorway between the two areas, I would get a nice anodised aluminium tile stop to separate the two with a sharp line which corresponded to the edge of the doorway.

Making a ceramic mosaic sound like a fair bit of work. It could be done, but personally I don’t mind a little bit of definition between different areas.
