This is called "marquetry" and there are some really cool Web sites about this! Do a Google or Yahoo search for this word.

I’ve heard it called Intarsia, with the wood being 1/8" thick…and it’s also referred to as Marquetry, but that term is usually associated with thinner veneers.
With the thicker wood, it’s usually cut using a scroll saw…veneers are cut with an exacto, or sometimes a rotary cutter.
Either are glued to a substrate, then clamped until the glue sets.
I’d check out Rockler online, it’s a well known woodworkers site. I’m sure they have books to instruct…and I know they have a diverse selection of veneers.
