What is the best flooring for my kitchen? Slate, tile, granite, marble, travertine or other? And why?

I don’t know anything about the different flooring options. Can someone tell me about the different kinds and the benefits or drawbacks to each? What kind do you like?

natural stones are beautiful, but require extra maintenance, sealing and aren’t as durable as porcelain. And you can get a nice porcelain that mimics marble or other stones for less than stone.
Vinyl is more comfortable, but easily damaged.
Wood (5/4 hardwood) is nice, but can be damaged. It can also be repaired some what easily for minor scratches.
If it was my house I’d stick with a nice porcelain for a kitchen

I would stay away from marble in a kitchen or bath because they can be very slippery when they have spills. If you do use marble make sure that it is honed (polished to a dull lustre). This will hepp with the slick problem. Also marble can be porous and show rings and staining. Save the granite for your counters.
I love slate becaus it has alot of natural color like the marble and it really conceals the dirt. Make sure that if you so use slate that you make sure that is guaged slate. (meaning that they are all the same thickness). This will make installation alot easier.
I also think that there are alot of great looking tiles (porcelain) that have a great look. Just make sure that the grout is the right kind. Try using Laticretes Spectra lock series. I wears like iron and it really does not stain. Wow, have grouts come along way. I hope this helps.
