What should I use as a base for my mosaic artwork?

Date June 4, 2010

I’m new to the mosaic art thing.. And was wondering from actual people that do it… What they use as a base.. I hear wood is not very good cause it absorbs the moisture out of the grout.. And yes these will be for indoor use only.. So I don’t think concrete board is necessary..

If you prime the wood surface, you should have no problems with moisture absorption.

If your mosaic materials are not too heavy, you can think about using primed canvas board for your base. The end result can be a sturdy piece and relatively light in weight, compared to a piece of wood.

If you can find a tile the size you want, and use the back of it, that works pretty good.
