why do we make fun of the Arab world so much? ?

Date July 1, 2010

In the Arab world, shoe flinging is a gesture of extreme disrespect. A notable occurrence of this gesture happened in Baghdad, Iraq in 2003. When U.S. forces pulled down a giant statue of Saddam Hussein during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, many Iraqi detractors of Hussein threw their shoes at the fallen statue.

This may be an ancient gesture from the Middle East; Psalms 60:8, speaking of some of the traditional enemies of Judah, says that "Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe…." (KJV)

The shoe represents the lowest part of the body (the foot) and displaying or throwing a shoe at someone or something in Arab cultures denotes that the person or thing is "beneath them." Showing the bottom of one’s feet or shoes (for example, putting one’s feet up on a table or desk) in Arab cultures is considered an extreme insult. Examples include Iraqi citizens smacking torn-down posters of Saddam Hussein with their shoes, and the depiction of President of the United States George H. W. Bush on a tile mosaic of the floor of the Al-Rashid Hotel’s lobby, forcing all visitors entering the hotel to walk on Bush’s face to enter the hotel.

During President George W. Bush’s surprise visit to Iraq in December 2008, an Iraqi man threw shoes at him during a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Kamel al-Maliki.[1]

is it just me or is shoe flinging make more since then shoting some one cuz they took your parking spot at the mall.

yes it makes more sense, and I’m sure that it was hard to get a gun into the spot where the pres. spoke. I liked the video. I thought it was great that an Iraqi was able to show his disrespect without trying to kill someone.

Because a group of people from the "Arab world" attacked us.

Seriously though, I’d like someone to name one country for me where throwing your shoes at someone’s head is a sign of "respect". In what country is that not a sign of disrespect?

First of all, the people you are talking about aren’t Arabs. Arabs live in Saudi-Arabia and Africa, they are *Arab*ians. Sadam Hussein was Pakistanian and there is a very big difference between the people you are talking about and Arabs.

Maybe because in my lifetime I have seen them go backward as a society rather than forward.

But then we can’t talk, because we’ve gone in the wrong direction as well. We’re so damned politically correct we can’t even breathe.

I noticed this past week that almost all restaurants in my area that used to decorate a little for Christmas are afraid to. They don’t want to be accused of offending anybody.

For crying out loud, when are we all going to start acting like adults.

Oh, and by the way – Merry Christmas!!! Are you offended?

I guess it’s because it gotten so passe to continue to make fun of the French, English, Canadian, Mexicans, Swedes, Finns, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, so the Arabs were there and now it’s their turn.

A lot of it has to do with the lack of understanding as it relates to their culture. The main reason why people are made fun of in general is because they do not know about the culture, so if they do not understand it they will likely reject it if they are not open, and they will ridicule it. The other reason why many make fun of it is because many of their habits and way of life seems taboo to us as Americans. Not so much the extreme cases dealing with terrorism, but the fact that they have different religions that sponsor terrorism, and the way they dress and the things they do in their culture as it relates to their family and citizens within the culture. Making fun of another culture is wrong no matter who is doing it, but it comes from the lack of understanding the the inability to relate and take the time to learn about the reason why they are the way they are.

That’s funny; your headline question should have said "Why do Arab’s disrespect us so bad" by that logic. You sighted two examples of our president’s being disrespected and then one hypothetical one in

"shoting some one cuz they took your parking spot at the mall"

    When did that happen?

If you want to read the Bible for the answer try reading Genesis 25:18 where they refer to Ishmael’s descendants.

"His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the border of Egypt, as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers."

Isn’t it obvious that some Arab’s have no intention of making peace? If all anybody did was "make fun" then that would be a great improvement. But people are dying and George W Bush’s reaction to that gesture is a prime example of who is being wise and mature.

Well, let us consider some of the benefits we have from the Arab world or more properly the middle-ages civilization of the Muslims.

They had slaves, and we had serfs. Almost one for us but we became slavers in a big way a few centuries later.

They had algebra and we were struggling with roman numerals –

They had the concept of zero which allowed them to keep accounts through double-entry–fortunately we took the idea from them.

Look at the number of stars with arabic names. Their astronomy, medicine, chemistry were all ahead of ours. They might well have overrun us except Charles Martel at Tours fighured out that they would lose the battle to protect their baggage train with all its accumulated loot.

We probably have no reason at all to make fun of them. What does concern me is their level of education of their populace. It seems too narrowly focused in many instances, leaving people ignorant enough to be easily influenced by unscrupulous demagogues. (Of course I can say the same for us, just not quite as pervasive).

If we do make fun of the Arab world (meaning those peoples who speak Arabic as a first language) as you suggest, ti must be xenophobia.
